Socketed Barbed Javelin Head – Legionare Weapon

Roman Empire – 1st – 3rd Century

Material – Iron

This is a  barbed throwing javelin head.  It would have been employed on a long shaft and carried by infantry.  As advancing infantry would approach the enemy, javelin with these barbed projectiles would be hurled at the opposing army.  Large barbed design would have been employed against enemies of light or no armor with devastating results.  Wide slashing head features two elongate barbs that would make it impossible to remove without severe wound damage.  Twisted wrought neck design provided added strength upon impact.
